Default Dual Layer option with Exact Copy preset

I'm having a peculiar problem with every single DVD I try to copy using the Exact Copy preset. I have the Dual Layer Media check box checked ON by default. After I put a source DVD in the drive and 1 Click has processed it, I unclick the Dual Layer Media check box to see if the disk requires dual layer media. Every single time I get the message that Dual Layer Media is required which does not seem out of the ordinary, so I check the Dual Layer Media box back on.

However, when I then click the Start button to start the copy, every single time I get another pop up that says "Dual Layer Media is not required for this DVD". I have tried once or twice to uncheck Dual Layer Media and proceed with the copy, but when the program gets to the Burning stage, it requires a dual layer disk or the burn fails.

Does anyone else have this problem or have an explanation as to why the program can't seem to decide whether or not dual layer media is required? This didn't used to happen. It only started several months ago - I think with one of the updates.

Thanks for any advice or help.

For the record... its not the program having a hard time making a decision, its you. All that checking and unchecking in the middle of the process is bound to screw things up.

Virtually all DVDs are on DL originals. It would be a fairly rare instance when a movie is on a single layer disc. Just uncheck the DL block as your default, let 1Click scan the disc, and see if it comes up with a message that an exact copy can be made. If you don't see that message, check the DL block and rescan... then you'll get it. I don't use the exact copy preset. I use the "Full disc without compression" preset.

Default Dual Layer option with Exact Copy preset

Thanks for the response and the suggestions.

I agree with you on the checking and unchecking, as well as the fact that most disks are DL's. However, I often copy PBS-type documentaries and similar programs that aren't always on a DL disk.

That being said, tonight I put a source disk in my drive and used another program to verify that it was indeed a DL disk. I fired up 1Click (with the Exact Copy preset and DL option defaulted on). It scanned the drive and immediately when I clicked Start it popped up the message, "Dual Layer media is not required for this disk. Do you want to disable it?" This disk has 8GB of stuff on it, so it's not even close. Seems to me like a bug in the program.

I understand that you verified that it was a DL disc. How did you verify that it actually had 8GB of data on it? Any disc that's been finalized will show 100% usage, even if it only one small file is copied to the disc. You can check the data by having the disc in a drive and opening My Computer.

I'd also like to have a look at a log concerning this issue. I'm not running into it at all.

Hey guys,
Thanks for the quick responses. I should have posted a log with my original message, so I'm sorry for that. To answer your questions:

Shannon, "Why am I using Dual Layer media?" I suppose the obvious answer is that I want an exact copy of a DVD that requires larger than Single Layer media, with all of the extras and without compression. However, I suspect by your question that there may be another way to do this and still use only Single Layer media. If that's true, I've never taken the time to determine how to do that, so if there's an easy answer, please enlighten me.

GA, I verified the disc using both My Computer as well as another program I downloaded called, DVDInfoPro.

I used one of my own discs to create a log that illustrates the problem I'm having. I'm uploading the log below, however, I did notice something interesting 4 lines before the copy step completed: "Source size : "0.0000" GB". That would probably explain why 1Click doesn't think I need a Dual Layer disk, but now I'm curious as to why 1Click can't get the size of the disc. BTW, the copy was created without any other issues.

Anyway, thanks again for your assistance with this, and here's a log file that illustrates my problem.

Each time You finish with one Disc > Close 1Click

If there seems to be a Problem - Reading the Source

You need to Allow DVD43 / Your Source drive to "Refresh"

The Same would apply After a Failed burn

Shannon, thanks for the wealth of information. I've gotten fairly busy, so it'll be a week or so before I can go through all of the steps. However, I'm looking forward to implementing your suggestions and seeing if that helps.
I will post back when I've followed through.
